Speaking of Village Hideaway we still have our most lovely guests staying with us now for their third month. Remember I mentioned them in my last newsletter? Rurik, Jenny and 5 yr. old Luke. Here's a pic of Luke and our cat Molly who he "babysat" while we went to Vancouver. (read more)
There is soooo much happening in the wee Village
these days. There are a number of new residential and commercial
developments proposed and going before council for approval.

As you can see from the photos we have had a winter
wonderland in the wee Village this past month. The amount of snow is
amazing and the cold temperatures for such a length of time are
unusual.

The bears are finishing up the apples and getting ready for
hibernation. Misty kept us awake for about an hour last night
growling at something although we never did know what the something
was.

"Cumberland Chronicles" section of our newsletter. This is a photo
of a wonderful, not so little visitor we had this week at 4:45am.

The Big Pink Store (heritage building) as it is affectionately
called has been sold and in the last few days it has been empty. I
can hardly wait to see what is going in there. Rumour has it antique
dealers from Victoria have purchased it.

The Village of Cumberland is hopping this time of
year. It is the annual May Day weekend when the Village awakens with
activities. We have a May Day parade, the crowning of the May Day
Queen, a celebration of Market Days and a big celebration at the
Village Park where the little ones dance around the Maypole.

Brad, Tania and Cohen were here for a weekend
visit and we had a grand time. This is a picture of them in the
Orchard in front of the 100 year old apple tree I purchased at our
Rotary auction last October.

We had a few things happening around the Village this past month. As
Valentines Day fell on a Wednesday this year, David and I went for burger
night at the local pub to celebrate. As we walked to the Waverley we
noticed several pink hearts made of paper posted around the Village. On
each pink heart was a quote related to love, friendship or giving to
others. It was such a lovely touch and made such an interesting walk.
The Valentines had been put around the Village by a group of young
people early in the morning to brighten everyones day. Certainly
brightened ours! (read more)
Life in our little Village is
never dull. We have a developer who has been diligently working with
the Village for over a year now to be able to bring in some more
housing and commercial ventures. There of course is opposition and
to me it comes from a rather odd place; those who are more recent
transplants from other places in BC, Canada and some from the rest
of the World.

Weve been entertaining quite a
bit in this little Village of Cumberland and its been great. As you
can see the trees look beautiful with the snow on them creating the
look of a Winter Wonderland. Our particular street has been a bit of
an ice rink on a few days when the snow melted and then froze
overnight. A whole new way of driving again now that we are away
from the ocean.

It has been a busy time in the Village this past while. Theres a
new restaurant in town and we went with our friends Helen and Tom to
check it out. We ordered all but two things on the menu and it was
absolutely delicious! Of course we walked there and back; thats the
beauty of living here.

Well, weve been in our new house and Cumberland for a year now.
Absolutely amazing and wonderful. The cherry trees were very abundant
this year bringing with them some hungry bears. It was quite neat
to watch the bears climb the trees, bend branches and balance themselves
while they chomped away on the fruit. They were quite oblivious to us
even as we shone a flashlight on one of them late at night. Misty has
been on bear watch barking away at the least smell or sight of one. We
are coming into apple season now so we expect them to be back picking
apples before they settle in for their winter hibernation. (read more)
The Village has been rocking this
past month. Weve got a new coffee bar, a gift & garden store, a
small plant nursery, a new and our first dentist and chiropractor,
and a caf re-opened under new ownership with a very positive change
in ambiance. What more can we ask for? There really isnt a day that
goes by that David & I dont mention how fortunate it is we live in
this fabulous little Village and what a perfect choice we made in
building here.

The answer is. beautiful sod in our back yard. A real back yard.
Yeah!!! Quick, click here to have a look at the photos taken today. What
a difference sod makes. Theres a place for the compost, a large raised
garden bed for my mom, two garden beds next to the stairs for flowers
and stepping-stones to the basement entrance where Davids workshop and
storage is. I cant believe how great it looks and how it completes the
back of the house. The front has been started and I expect will be
completed in the next two weeks. Theres no grass and more landscaping
in the front.

Good news and bad news. Good news is that we
continue to love living here, enjoying the hiking trails and all the
amenities in the Village. Have a new butcher now who is open seven
days a week and will be selling locally grown veggies, fresh farm
eggs as well as all the delicious meat. Weve had some gloriously
beautiful sunny days, longer now with DST and our evenings are
filled with the croaking of a massive unknown number of frogs. What a
sound! Apparently they come out each Spring which is a healthy sign that
all is well.

We had an
exciting celebration in the Village in February. There was a Taiwanese
Lantern Festival for 10 days, kicked off by a foot parade down the main
street to the park where 4000 people gathered to hear a Taiko drumming
group (all teenagers) from Taiwan, a Buddhist blessing and watch as
lanterns were lit and offered up to the skies. The cold clear night was
lit up with thousands of brilliant stars. The Lantern display is held
indoors with about 40-lighted handmade lanterns.

habit of going to Burger night at the Wave (Waverly) in the Village. Fresh homemade
burger and real fries all for $3.00. Can you believe it? (read more)

the garage. Heavenly!

Well that foundation that I talked about got poured and as you can see
in this
picture it is huge! The bill hasn't arrived as yet so we'll see
plus they had to shut the hydro down for 3 hrs while it was being poured at a
cost of $1300.

This was a bit of a slower process than we had planned, as the guy heading up this part was sick for three days. The plan is to pour the foundation this week and begin framing a few days following.
