 - Quote of the month

"Live on the outer edge of your possible reaches, not on the inner edge of your security."

- F.M. Hudson

- A Note from Linda

Yes, it is June already and some time since I sat at my computer and wrote for my newsletter. I’m not sure what to say about that. Was overwhelmed? Under whelmed? Too much going on and not creating the time and space for writing? The list could go on and on although it will end here. Time to move on.

Have I been living on the outer edge of possible reaches as our quote this month reads? Have you? Wonder what I’d be doing differently or in what way I’d be behaving differently if I were. Would I be reaching for something or having arrived somewhere differently in my work and my life. Would you? As always, more things to think about which I am sure you would agree; I love to do. :~)

Speaking of thinking, this next little article about The Garbage Truck got me doing just that. How is it that some people just seem to take things in stride and not personally and bless the world with their presence while others fill their garbage trucks on a daily basis and dump it on everyone they come in contact with? This taxi driver really knows how to live life fully and fill his balloon with things, people and experiences that have meaning for him. If we did that more consciously and more often we’d be creating a community of cooperation and connection. Now that would be living on the outer edge of possible reaches! I am game to pay more attention to this. Are you? Have a read below and feel free to send your comments to me at oprica@ascentcoaching.com

  - Book Report

Subject: Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport . We were driving in the right lane
when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us.

My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches!
The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly.
So I asked, 'Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!'

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks.

They run around full of garbage (frustration, anger, and disappointment, etc.).
As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you.

Don't take it personally.
Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.

Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.
The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day.

Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so...

'Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.' Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

- Financial Clutter, Again - Dot Snow

Looking back I see I wrote two previous essays about financial clutter back in 2005. It was interesting to re-read them now, 2-3 years later, and notice what changes I have and haven't made. I see that I have had to make modifications to my savings plan as my income has not increased on the same slope as my living expenses here in California! I cannot maintain as ambitious a savings plan as I had mapped out a few years ago. And of course, life continues to happen----those unexpected expenses come up due to circumstances unforeseen and beyond one's personal control.

Nonetheless, there is one savings strategy that has endured….that of saving up ahead of a conference or vacation so that when the time rolls around the trip is paid for, I have a little spending money in my pocket, and I don't have the mental clutter during the trip of figuring out how to pay for it all once it's over. Nothing fancy; just an envelope locked away in a drawer that I feed with each paycheck.

I'm employing that strategy for two specific trips in 2008. The first is coming up in June; it's the biennial stitching seminar sponsored by the Greater Pacific Region of the Embroiderers' Guild of America. From my perspective it'll be a slice of heaven: 7 days at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove on the California coast, away from televisions and telephones, with 5 days of classes learning all kinds of new stitching techniques. There will be social activities with like-minded stitching enthusiasts, exhibit galleries of spectacular pieces created by Guild members to view, and plenty of opportunities for hiking and finding quiet, meditative spaces in a beautiful place.

The Seminar planners encourage members to use a savings plan, and so I started my envelope when the program was announced last June. Each paycheck I've been putting away a minimum amount and more when I could. Yes, I know that an envelope sitting my in drawer is not earning interest. On the other hand, it doesn't get accidentally spent up if I carry it in my account balance, nor penalized if I withdraw it early from a savings plan. To date, I have the registration fee, the kit fees, and the food and lodging expenses covered in total. Whatever I can save up over the next 3 months will cover my gas and spending money for Merchandise Night! And best of all, I can enjoy the experience fully, knowing that I won't face additional debt from it when I return home.

The strategy works for other things too. What is it that you want? I'm thinking it may be time to start an envelope for an upgraded television in anticipation of signals going digital in 2009. I encourage you to try the strategy and see how it works for you. Pick something that's not too expensive as your first item (after all, you want to maximize your opportunity for success!) and set aside an envelope for it. Remember David Bach's book "Start Late, Finish Rich" where he speaks of identifying and eliminating your "Latte Factor"? At a minimum, put aside each week what you save from eliminating your Latte Factor and add a little bit more if you're able to. The trick is not to raid the envelope once money has been set aside! Sooner than you might imagine, your wish could be a reality. Good luck, and onward!

Personal Growth, Personal Independence: The Limit Is ME

by - Robin Good

One day all the employees reached the office and they saw a big advice on the door on which it was written:

"Yesterday the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral in the room that has been prepared in the gym".

In the beginning, they all got sad for the death of one of their colleagues, but after a while they started getting curious to know who was that man who hindered the growth of his colleagues and the company itself.

The excitement in the gym was such that security agents were ordered to control the crowd within the room.

The more people reached the coffin, the more the excitement heated up. Everyone thought: "Who is this guy who was hindering my progress? Well, at least he died!".

One by one the thrilled employees got closer to the coffin, and when they looked inside it they suddenly became speechless. They stood nearby the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul.

There was a mirror inside the coffin: everyone who looked inside it could see himself.

There was also a sign next to the mirror that said: "There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth: it is YOU. You are the only person who can revolutionize your life. You are the only person who can influence your happiness, your realization and your success. You are the only person who can help yourself.

Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your friends change, when your parents change, when your partner changes, when your company changes. Your life changes when YOU change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs, when you realize that you are the only one responsible for your life.

"The most important relationship you can have is the one you have with yourself"

Examine yourself, watch yourself. Don't be afraid of difficulties, impossibilities and losses: be a winner, build yourself and your reality.

The world is like a mirror: it gives back to anyone the reflection of the thoughts in which one has strongly believed.

It's the way you face Life that makes the difference.

Here's what people have said about Linda's retreats:

"My personal weekend retreat guided by Linda was a wake up call followed by fresh air. Linda skilfully drew my attention to fundamental patterns that could hold me back from my true potential. The endeavour was not over at the end of the weekend and 6 weeks later I am marvelling at how many available enjoyable careers are out there." Julie
"My retreat with Linda helped me to identify the areas of my life that were not working. She helped me to formulate a plan that would facilitate those changes and my coaching with her gave me the direction and the confidence to move forward. We continue to work together as I move along the path towards creating more space for what I want  in my life." CC

 - Personal Reflections

Where to begin? I’ll start with the pictures I’ve included this month and go from there. Hang on it’ll be a long one!

The first one is of Daniel & Kelsey who visited us for a weekend before they headed out on their yearlong trip around the world. They are a delightful young couple that we’ve come to know and love more over the past three years. Daniel is the eldest son of my deceased friend Annemarie. We have spent a great deal of time together over the last three years and shared some very special occasions together, including Daniel & Kelsey’s wedding last September. We had a great time hearing about the plans for their trip and sharing some excellent wine and food over the weekend. We hear from them regularly and they are having a ball.

The next picture is the view from our cabin on a three-day trip to Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Our cabin was perched on a bluff over-looking the Pacific Ocean. The waves were high, the beaches near empty and we spent hours with Misty walking and playing on the beaches and trails. As always Misty was exhausted and slept the entire way home. Even though she is eight years old now she still thinks she’s a puppy when it comes to playing on the beach.

Our next picture is of our daughter Amanda and her two dogs that made a surprise visit for her Dad’s 60th birthday in March. Amanda and I planned it all behind the scenes, booked off some time for David from work and she was here when he arrived home. David was thrilled and we had a wonderful two days with Amanda. A cherished memory to keep. We also celebrated with Brad, Tania and Cohen the following weekend. Unfortunately no pictures as I hadn’t checked to see if the batteries were charged. From the moment we arrived until dinner, Cohen who is three kept telling us “we are having a special cake for your birthday Grandpa. It’s a surprise!” We had a fabulous “surprise” chocolate cake for grandpa’s birthday along with an outstanding dinner made by Tania and Brad.

The next picture is of Natalio and me. Natalio was the Rotary Team Leader of the Group Study Exchange group from Mexico who visited our community for five days last month and stayed with David and I while in the Comox Valley. Natalio is a physician in Mexico. It was also his first time in Canada and speaking English. He did a terrific job with expressing himself and we spent many hours comparing notes on health care and life in each of our countries. Rotary brings us so many blessings.

I have been very busy these last few months preparing for my term as President of the Cumberland Rotary Club, which officially begins July 1. I have been to three days of intense training, written a club plan for our coming year, held extraordinary club meetings so we could decide as a group, our key fund-raising recipients and planned for up-coming board meetings to get us started. I am learning a great deal about myself, others, leadership and Rotary. My “Installation dinner” is being held this month so more news on that in my next newsletter. There are four Rotary clubs in the Comox Valley and for the first time all four clubs are going to do a joint project. This is very exciting and the four in-coming presidents have been meeting together since March to begin planning our joint initiative. I am sure you’ll be hearing a lot from me over the coming year about what our Rotary club is up to. I am quite excited about it.

I completed my year as President of the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce in April. It was a great year, a wonderful opportunity and a privilege to serve in that role. It felt very odd to have such few meetings related to the Chamber and even fewer emails. I did get over that though and am delighted to serve this year as the Past President. :~) Now I get to spend more time in our wee Village and that is a good thing.

 - Cumberland Chronicles

There is soooo much happening in the wee Village these days. There are a number of new residential and commercial developments proposed and going before council for approval. There have been moments in the last few months that have been the best of times and the worst of times. We have such a wonderful Village feel to our small community and with the proposed developments we will more than double in population over the next 10 years. This is very scary and disconcerting for many. I think it is important for the developers to be cognizant and held accountable to ensure that their projects enhance the feel and the prosperity of the Village rather than detract from it. The council has a big job in the choices that they make on behalf of the Village residents. I personally think that they are listening to the residents and consciously choosing what they feel is the right thing for the growth of Cumberland. The proof will be in the pudding as they say. Our Mayor is a principled man with excellent leadership abilities and forethought and will lead in the very best way keeping our Village and its values top of mind.

We have some exciting new additions to our “downtown”. A small organic grocery store named “Seeds” has recently opened and has such a great feel to it. We have an organic cotton clothing store just opened, a tea shop complete with a table, chairs and tea service for little ones to enjoy and my favorite shop which will open soon… a homemade chocolate shop. Yahoo! I absolutely love that there is very little that I would need to travel out of the Village for. We are getting closer to being fully sustainable for our needs and that is good for the residents, the environment and our economy. I recently bought one of those old-fashioned three speed bikes complete with a basket and it will be fun to cycle about the Village to purchase the things I need. It will increase my exercise and save on fuel (those fuel prices - mama mia!)

A few weeks ago we had a big weekend celebration for the May long weekend. There was a fabulous parade with people attending from many communities and countries (we are quite famous for our parade), which culminated in the crowning of the May Queen for the 114th year. Here’s a picture of Liz, the May Queen and I. Liz got ready for the parade and crowning ceremony at our house. Our Rotary club sponsored the May Queen this year so I and two other club members assisted the Queen in her shopping and preparing for her yearlong role. It was such fun for all of us and Liz has been transformed in the area of confidence having gone through this process.

The Village Hideaway has not been as busy as last year at this time. Seems increased fuel prices are keeping more people at home rather than traveling and it’s having an impact on the tourism industry. We have had some wonderful guests as always. We currently have a couple with us who are having a week away together while he is on leave from Afghanistan. They of course are thoroughly enjoying the peace and quiet and being surrounded by nature. I can’t imagine what his life must be like on a day-to-day basis while serving over there. I am glad that we can offer them such a lovely place to re-group, rest and re-connect.

Speaking of a beautiful place. As I wrap up this newsletter I am enjoying the sight of three bald eagles flying above our backyard and listening to the song of the Loon in the near distance. You truly cannot beat the beauty and sounds where we live at the edge of the forest or the wee Village we call home.

PS -  If any of you know an architect who is passionate about the environment and wants to be part of a community of 65 thousand people on Vancouver Island and contribute to its success, then have them email me at oprica@ascentcoaching.com

I know of a firm that is looking to add that particular someone to their team.

"What a wonderful informative first of 2008 newsletter – just packed with great goodies to share.

I am doing up the “Blessed” quote to post in my office, the directors’ office and the staff lunch area – what an amazing way to look at everything – thank you.

The New York Times article on clutter is brilliant – keeping stuff and not cleaning out work areas is unhealthy. I have a bag in the bottom of my closet and each time I put something and immediately take it off it then goes in the bag. Once every other week I have been taking items to the women’s shelter in town. Boy did I do some purging this holiday – it felt great – as always. I refuse to buy more storage bins to keep more stuff – my motto is if I am not using it give it away to someone who may! Let them store it! LOL

And thanks for the tears from Cohen’s “Grandma you are the best”. Isn’t he a lucky man to have such a cool grandma!

I am grateful to be on your mailing list as you inspire me to grow and look for more ways to improve.

Thank you Linda"
