Remembrance Day -
A Note from
Linda
Remembering those who sacrificed
so much for our freedom. The freedom to engage in our businesses and
support our community as it grows and flourishes. The freedom our
children and grandchildren have to choose for themselves the lives they
want to have and where they want to live in this world of ours. The
freedom to develop strong and positive relationships with those on other
continents and in other countries. The freedom to learn from one another
and in a variety of ways. The freedom to dream and create.
The freedom to make choices every day in our businesses and in our
lives.
The freedom to support one another in making a better world for all of
us, for increased understanding and taking those opportunities to
connect with others. Freedom seven letters that define our lives and our future in just one
word.
I trust each of you took a few moments to appreciate the freedom we have
so generously been given.

Book
Report - The Speed of Trust
By Stephen M.R. Covey (son of Stephen R. Covey – The 7 Habits)
ISBN – 13: 978-0-7432-9730-1
I know I have written about this book before - almost a year ago
now. Well, my discussions with clients and others are forever
related to this topic and this book so I thought it would be good to
mention it again in this newsletter.
It comes to mind again because so many of my conversations have
been around the incredible time decisions take to make, particularly
inside many organizations where there is little or no trust. It is
almost epidemic for some reason. Wonder if it has to do with people
not developing relationships with others in this fast-paced world of
ours? I do think they are highly connected and I am concerned about
the increased level of emotional and mental clutter that is a direct
result of this lack of or limited level of trust. Clients are
frequently commenting on the “lack of productivity and forward
movement” and an increased time spent re-hashing old stuff. This
book is an absolute must have in every office, boardroom and
home.
If you do not have a copy then I suggest you order one right now
and
right here by
clicking on this link. And while you are at it,
order one for a friend, co-worker, boss or your work group. You will
not regret this purchase. I guarantee it.
With various holidays coming up around the world this book
would make a great lazy afternoon read. You won’t want to put it
down.

Clutter - by Kody and Jessie - Age 11
Do you ever wonder
how clutter gets all over your house? It’s when your life is in a
rush and you just throw it all down like you don’t care at all. The
stuff just piles and piles up until you can’t stand it anymore. It’s
almost like a tsunami that starts off small and gets bigger, and
bigger, and bigger until you break down and clean it up! Suddenly it
takes over your social life because you have to clean up weekly. You
have to change your plans so that you can fit in your precious time
to clean. Your friends will be disappointed because you can’t do
anything with them. When the clutter is all gone you will feel
rejuvenated and rarin’ to go!! Then the cycle of clutter starts
again. It doesn’t take that long to take whatever it is you are
using back to its spot when you are done. Clutter is not your friend
so come clean and be happy.

Here's what
people have said about Linda's retreats:
|
"My personal weekend retreat
guided by Linda was a wake up call followed by fresh
air. Linda skilfully drew my attention to
fundamental patterns that could hold me back from my
true potential. The endeavour was not over at the end
of the weekend and 6 weeks later I am marvelling at
how many available enjoyable careers are out there."

"My
retreat with Linda helped me to identify the areas of my life that
were not working. She helped me to formulate a plan that would
facilitate those changes
and my coaching with her gave me the direction and the confidence
to move forward. We
continue to work together as
I move along the path towards creating more
space for what I want in my life."

Personal Reflections
Well, to say the least, it has been a busy few
months! I met up with a client from California, in Seattle for three
days and we had a wonderful time. Work and play, great food, perfect
weather and of course outstanding company. Was a nice treat to be
able to work together in person instead of on the phone.
Mid-September was our 11th annual women’s weekend at our house.
There were eight of us this year and we had our usual fabulous time:
Friday night traditional dinner of my home-made pasta sauce, wine
sipping...and sipping and a full evening of catch-up on everyone’s
lives, kids and grandkids with a later bedtime than we usually have.
Saturday was a full day of various activities, including the farmers
market, lunch, and a hike for some, shopping for others and a very
fine fondue for dinner complete with Belgian chocolate. And to bed
much earlier! The house is amazingly quiet on Sunday afternoon after
the women head home. The house goes from a constant buzz to total
silence in just five minutes. I gather the sheets and towels for
laundering and reflect on the beauty of this weekend and the depth
of the friendships we have. The older I get, the more my women
friends hold a bigger place in my heart. I am looking forward to
next year already.
David, Misty and I headed off on a road trip to Calgary at the end
of September to visit our good friends Simon & Georgina. We
celebrated the arrival of their new puppy that Misty quite loved
(along with her toys) and Georgina’s 1st anniversary post breast
cancer surgery. A very happy time for sure.
We spent a lot of family time in September and beginning of Octob er
with kids and grandkids and had such wonderful and meaningful visits
with everyone. It was a great treat and we can’t wait to do it all
again. With everyone’s busy schedules it is so difficult to arrange
a time when we can be together. These visits were priceless for me.
I have been quite surprised with the amount of time involved in my
role as Chamber President. We have a very large and growing Chamber,
which is a good thing and along with that comes the increased
visibility, which equates to more meetings, more invitations and
more to do, including writing a monthly column for the newspaper.
Between this, my business, the Village Hideaway vacation rental,
holidays, visits and Rotary there have been a few times I have felt
totally overwhelmed and exhausted these past two months. We had a
big Italian dinner Rotary fund-raiser mid-October (more in
Cumberland Chronicles) for which I was the Chair and that has
successfully been completed so life seems to be getting back on
track. David and I are also going to take a weekend away without
Misty (no responsibility except to ourselves) by the end of the
month and that will be a great time to re-juvenate, relax, walk,
read and eat some great food somewhere else.
Oh yes, just wanted to comment on the clutter article by the 11 year
olds, Kody and Jessie. These two are absolute “best friends” and do
everything together. I smile every time I think of those two and
their friendship. Kody’s mom told me that after they wrote the
article, the girls did an interpretive dance about clutter that was
“very frantic and scary”. What a cool way to interpret something. I
will be seeing them this week and I hope they will do their dance
for me. How creative and I can only imagine the impact! Very cool
indeed.
The absolute best news to report is that our 3-month guests from the
summer, Woody and Arianna, arrived back at the Village Hideaway two
weeks ago and on Saturday, November 3rd had a beautiful little girl,
Isabella Rose! They arrived back at their “home away from home” on
the 5th and we are thrilled to have them here. I plan to take a
picture of the happy threesome for our next newsletter. David and I
are delighted when we hear that little cry. A true little miracle,
Isabella is.

Cumberland Chronicles
The bears are finishing up the apples and getting ready for
hibernation. Misty kept us awake for about an hour last night
growling at something although we never did know what the something
was. I do imagine it was a bear rustling about in the trees for the
last remnants of apples. Both the bears and the apples have been
plentiful this year and we have all co-habited very nicely. I must
becoming accustomed to them, I sound so calm as I write about them.
Our Rotary club, Cumberland Centennial had its Italian dinner and
auction October 13th and it was a huge success. Our small club of 24
raised $25,000 after expenses and can now purchase two
Victorian-style bus shelters for the Village as well as funding a
number of other smaller projects. Fabulous, wouldn’t you say? We are
thrilled with our efforts. It was truly an event in the Village that
was a huge hit; an old-fashioned family style dinner, similar to
what was held in the Village many years ago. Our 280 tickets were
sold out within just a few short weeks and it is becoming a
must-attend event. Our small group worked tirelessly for three days
to get the gym decorated, the auction items set up, tables arranged
and set, the food prepared, the event itself and then a morning of
clean-up the day after. Whew! What a great team we had including a
number of very helpful spouses. We have great energy in our club and
as the chair of this event my job was a breeze with the exceptional
committee chairs we had. I look forward to chairing this event next
year and raising money for new projects in the Village and around
the world.
On Halloween the shopkeepers opened their doors and provided treats
for all the ghosts and goblins. It was the 2nd annual Halloween
event in downtown Cumberland and was a big success with 200 kids
participating, 140 more than last year. It was wonderful to still
have daylight savings time on our side.
Our vacation rental, Village Hideaway, is even getting some notice
and attention in the Village. We have had several inquiries from
people in our own neighborhood checking availability for family and
friends visiting the area. It’s perfect when you think of it. You
get to have a great visit and yet not have to be in each other’s
space all the time and the bonus is that the guests at Village
Hideaway can entertain their friends and family in their own place.
Speaking of Village Hideaway, we had guests stay with us for a month
while their house build was completing in Comox. We went to visit
them in their new space a few days after moving and Rhonda had an
interesting comment. She said they were so grateful that they stayed
in Cumberland versus where they were building because they got to
experience and enjoy first-hand all the old world charm that
Cumberland has to offer. When their kids visit at Christmas they
plan to bring them here and introduce them to the wonders of our wee
Village. Good news spreads quickly and we are always happy to have
good things happening in our Village.
