 - Quote of the month

" Time is not a line, but a series of now points."

~Taisen Deshimaru

- A Note from Linda

In relation to the quote, Valentine’s Day must have been one of the “now points” that I missed wishing all of you. Hope you all had a wonderful one surrounded by those you love. I had eye surgery and was delayed in writing my newsletter, as too much time at the computer can be irritating to my eyes. Just had my two week check-up and all is progressing as planned, and here I sit at my computer.

I’ve had a series of now points in the past six weeks, which have been very fulfilling both in my personal and professional life. I worked with an all female staff group on transitions and we had a most outstanding time together. This was a particularly solid team and our time together was really transformational and a delight for me to facilitate and witness. I also spent two days with another team and a team within that team. We spent a day talking about communication; the good, the bad and the ugly of it all. While learning and brainstorming and practicing new ways to communicate we were able to laugh a lot about our humanness. We also talked about how we hold assumptions and the impact those assumptions have on our patterns of communication and behaviour. Always a fascinating subject for me and a challenge for most of us, particularly when we look at work groups.

An upcoming “now point” if that is possible, is another retreat that I am doing with a woman from California in two weeks. I can’t wait till she arrives and we get to spend our three days together. Actually she’s coming a bit early so we’ll be able to have oodles of time to talk, think, and plan, and for her to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in our wonderful Village of Cumberland. Now that my husband and I have The Village Hideaway Vacation Suite, I have more flexibility in my retreat formats.  This suite allows me to host day long workshops for four or six people, as well as extended one on one retreats. Give me a call or send me an email and you too could have a fabulous retreat just for you or with a friend. Isn’t it time to focus on you?

- Book Report

Little Black Book of Connections

By Jeffrey Gitomer
ISBN – 13: 978-1-885167-66-8

This book, although on a different yet related subject, is as fabulous I think as last month’s book, The Speed of Trust by Stephen M. Covey.

This Little Black Book is full of very useful, very simple (interesting how things just continue to go back to simplicity) tips, suggestions and proven ways to connect with others. Whether you are in business for yourself or work inside an organization Jeffrey’s tips will be invaluable. This book is not for the person who is a lone ranger and wants to do everything on his/her own by him/herself. This book is for those who want to help and support others and themselves through connecting with others on a personal or professional level. The book is simply written and is an ideal reference book in that whenever you have a few minutes you can pick it up, get re-focused and re-inspired to do for others and in turn do for you. It is also a perfect book to take with you when you travel. It is small, compact and lightweight with an abundance of tips and tools for networking at a conference, convention or meeting.

Read it for yourself. I absolutely guarantee that you will come away having learned something new or shifted your thinking about networking and what it really means and the benefits that far outweigh the event or meeting you are attending.

 - Coaching Tip

Simplicity – I am reminded over and over again how keeping things simple can have such a profound effect in our lives. Funny, how we continue to complicate so much of our lives in the areas of space, money, work, relationships and our thinking. My experience has been that whenever I go back to the basics when struggling with a situation or dilemma, if I continue to simplify the equation I can consistently come up with a simple and effective solution. Here is one example. Maybe for the next few months we’ll keep this theme running and I can offer tips for one or two items each month. Even better, you could share your own insights and tips into simplifying areas of your life or work and send them to us at clutter@ascentcoaching.com

Meetings – most meetings are very complicated these days although they really needn’t be. A key to a good meeting is to state clearly at the beginning of the meeting what needs to be accomplished or achieved by the end of the meeting. As the Chair of the meeting, it is your responsibility to re-focus people back to the objective of the meeting. It is always helpful to let people know at the beginning as well, that if you see things running astray and off topic you will be bringing people back to point. If that is set at the start of the meeting people are less likely to take it “personally” when you cut them off or re-direct the conversation. The key here is to be consistent with this behaviour and clear with expectations. People will “get it” and they will appreciate that you have honored their time and input and walk away from the meeting feeling they have accomplished something.

I have a little sign that I picked up many years ago that I like to bring to meetings that I Chair to help me and others get the most out of the meeting and simplifying the process. Feel free to write it out for yourself and bring it to your meetings.

“The main thing is to keep the MAIN THING the main thing.”

Does it really get any simpler than that?

- Retreats

"My personal weekend retreat guided by Linda was a wake up call followed by fresh air. Linda skillfully drew my attention to fundamental patterns that could hold me back from my true potential. The endeavor was not over at the end of the weekend and 6 weeks later I am marveling at how many available enjoyable careers are out there." Julie

 - Personal Reflections

As I mentioned in 'A Note from Linda', I have had lasik eye surgery since writing our last newsletter. I love the results. I love walking in the rain without glasses that get wet. I love being able to fall asleep without having to take my contacts out. I love that my eyes don’t dry up or have a piece of dust in my eye when I wear my contacts. I do have to put teardrops in my eyes although it is less and less as time goes on. My mom also told me that taking two capsules of Flaxseed helps with eye hydration so I am doing that as well. I do have to wear readers when doing computer work or reading a book. I have some funky readers so I don’t mind that. I have had to train myself to have them in many places, as you’ll never know when you may have to read something. It has been a good thing and I am very pleased with outcome.

Speaking of my mother, she has now moved back East to her former city of Kingston, Ontario and is settling into her new suite very well despite the fact it is much smaller than the one she had here. All in all, it was a very good decision. My mom is spending oodles of time with her youngest grandchildren and is enjoying them immensely. David and I are awaiting some pictures of her new digs.

We have set up our vacation rental, the Village Hideaway, now and it is ready for guests. Here are a few pictures from the suite so you can see how beautiful and inviting it looks. We will be having our first guest this month from California and I am looking forward to her feedback on the experience. We’ve had a few tours through the suite so people can have a look and the comments back have been overwhelmingly supportive. It is a beautiful sunny day today and I took the opportunity to just sit in the suite and experience how comfortable, bright and inviting it is. It is a place that I know I’d be very happy spending time so I am sure guests would as well. The professional photographs have been taken, the wireless capabilities all set and the website is being completed as I write. It is a perfect home away from home, great for a businessperson or a traveler.

You can email me at Oprica@ascentcoaching.com if you’d like to inquire about availability or call my toll-free number at 1-888-391-2233 until the website is up and running. Looking forward to doing more daylong workshops for small groups and 1:1 retreats in that space. David and I are very excited about this additional venture in our lives.

I will be taking on the role of President of our Chamber of Commerce at the end of this month and I am so looking forward to the opportunity and the challenge. I have only one key objective this year as the President and that is to have more of our membership participate in the many activities and functions we host. As you know, I am big on connections and I feel if there are more people connecting in a meaningful way with others we will have a dynamite organization. We have an excellent Board as well as staff, and it will be an exciting year for me to work with all these folks and to contribute the skills and leadership I have, in addition to what they bring, to the success of the organization. I will keep you posted on how that goes as the year progresses. Very exciting!

I have had more wonderful clients come my way through referral and they of course are a delight for me to work with. I have met some business people new to the Comox Valley through Chamber activities and events and that has also been very rewarding. We’ve had some excellent conversations together about the keys to business success and what it takes to come to a new community and be able to find a place for yourself.
David’s taking a week’s holiday at the end of this month so we are talking about going to Tofino, BC for three or four days to veg out, walk on the beaches with our dog Misty and read a book. It will be very nice to get away from everyday responsibilities for a few days.

 - Cumberland Chronicles

We had a few things happening around the Village this past month. As Valentine’s Day fell on a Wednesday this year, David and I went for burger night at the local pub to celebrate. As we walked to the Waverley we noticed several pink hearts made of paper posted around the Village. On each pink heart was a quote related to love, friendship or giving to others. It was such a lovely touch and made such an interesting walk. The Valentine’s had been put around the Village by a group of young people early in the morning to brighten everyone’s day. Certainly brightened ours!

We also hosted a Taiwanese Lantern Festival here. This included a very large indoor display of large handmade lanterns made in Taiwan and brought here to share in our festival. The festival ran for almost two weeks. Other highlights, aside from the lanterns themselves, were a foot parade in the Village with fireworks, Taiko drumming and the release of several lanterns in the sky. The Festival was a huge success and we look forward to next year’s. Every year is different so there will always be new surprises.

This weekend we have another unusual event in the Village. My Rotary club has raised thousands of dollars this past year and purchased four defibrillators, three of which will be placed at different spots around the Village. The distribution and presentation will be this Saturday along with a demonstration of their use. These are the same kind found in very large airports around the world and what is significant is that we will be the first community in British Columbia to have these defibrillators and that a Rotary club of 25 people were able to raise many thousands of dollars to purchase them. Quite an accomplishment. I am proud to be part of this Rotary Club. Remember the tree from the 100-year-old apple tree that I purchased last fall? Well the $1000.00 I paid went to the fund for these machines. Very cool indeed. We’ll also be having a special day where there will be plaques erected in the orchard to commemorate their donations. I will take a picture of our tree for next newsletter.

The frogs are starting to croak into the nights now, the daffodils springing up, the tulip stems shooting out of the dirt so spring is just around the corner. Can’t wait. You know, we’ve been here now for 1.5 years and in so many ways feels like forever that we’ve been part of this community. We are grateful daily to be here.
