 - Quote of the month

"We've all heard the criticism "he talks too much." When was the last time you heard someone criticized for listening too much?"

~Norm Augustine, Former Chairman, Lockeed Martin

- A Note from Linda

I just celebrated my 53rd birthday on August 4 and as I sit at my computer I am finishing off my birthday cake while I write this newsletter. It is my inspiration as it is later in the evening and I have been working since six this morning. How could you not be inspired by a delicious piece of chocolate cake? I may regret it when I can’t sleep an hour from now.

Now, onto the newsletter and the quote. I was struck by this quote today as it reminded me of listening to a fellow this morning who went on and on mostly about himself really. I am not sure the point that he wanted to make. I did notice though the number of people with that "glazed look". You know that look that says I am mentally doing my to-do list or thinking what do I have next in my day? How lovely could it have been to hear him ask each person what they thought about the topic? I think as leaders in our offices, boardrooms and in our lives we too often make things about us rather than listening to what someone else is thinking. A case in point was this past week talking with a highly introverted client about joining in a golf tournament in order to meet people and increase her "network". I said to her the trick is to pretend it is her party and she is the host and start by asking one open-ended question such as "what brings you here tonight?" and then sit back and listen. She has been practicing this at work with her boss and is pleasantly surprised at the insights and knowledge she has gained about him, the company and his vision. Highly useful to her in her role and her boss has taken notice.

Next time you are tempted to speak, stop and ask a question and sit back and listen. I bet you’ll hear more than the words spoken.

Here's what people have said about Linda's retreats:

"My personal weekend retreat guided by Linda was a wake up call followed by fresh air. Linda skillfully drew my attention to fundamental patterns that could hold me back from my true potential. The endeavour was not over at the end of the weekend and 6 weeks later I am marveling at how many available enjoyable careers are out there." Julie
"My retreat with Linda helped me to identify the areas of my life that were not working. She helped me to formulate a plan that would facilitate those changes and my coaching with her gave me the direction and the confidence to move forward. We continue to work together as I move along the path towards creating more space for what I want  in my life." CC

De-cluttering the Backyard - a Note from Dot Snow

This summer, I’m making progress on de-cluttering my backyard and tackling lots of the issues that have prevented me from fully enjoying my yard. It started with the removal of two Douglas Firs from the southeast corner of the property---trees that were now too close to the house and the pool as they matured. I had mixed feelings about bringing down the trees. On one hand, they provided a perch for the many blue jays that came through the yard and provided a nice "woodsy" feel when one sat in the guest bedroom and looked out the window into the branches. On the other hand, the litter of fallen needles and cones made for a lot of ongoing clean-up, both in and around the pool. Once cracks in the cement started to appear, however, it was apparent that it was time to have the trees removed.

The trees were removed in a day—a remarkable feat in my opinion, given their size!—and once they were out, the backyard took on a whole different look and feel. Sunlight pours into that area of the yard all day long. Combined with the trimming of the oak trees I’d had done last fall, the entire back yard now receives so much more sunlight, and that gave me impetus to clean up the yard and make it more enjoyable to hang out in.

Here’s what we’ve done so far:

  • We summarized the pool. When the sun is out, it’s now shining on the pool and our bubble wrap solar cover raises the water temperature to 80 degrees without a heater. I’ve enjoyed many lazy floats on sunny weekend afternoons.

  • We planted a vegetable garden. Finally, the vegetables can get sufficient sunlight to be abundant. We’ve already enjoyed some early tomatoes, peppers, and cilantro.

  • We spruced up the rose bushes. It’s a nice change of pace from work to be outside working in the yard, and I’ve been much better about nurturing the rose bushes this year. My reward has been several spectacular blooms of color over the past few months.

  • We assembled a gazebo on the back deck. We found a great deal on a roomy gazebo complete with mosquito netting and put it up on the deck. It’s a comfortable place to just sit and enjoy the quiet of the neighbourhood and play the occasional game of chess.

  • We built a planter in the north end of the property. With all the additional sunlight coming through the yard, the north end of the yard was a newly discovered spot for sun-loving plants. Not only are we enjoying the blaze of blooming flowers (which I can also see from the upstairs bathroom window), we transplanted a plant from the side yard that had been in the way of walking a direct path down the side yard for years.

  • We finally installed the lattice panels along the edge of the deck to increase the feeling of privacy as we sit back there. Now that the yard looks and feels less cluttered and more functional, we find we’re spending more time enjoying it.

There are other projects that still remain to be completed---updating the pool house; a thorough power wash and waterproofing of the deck, and so on----the list of tasks never really ends. As you might imagine all this activity has generated a pile of clutter that needs to be disposed of, though that’s pretty much contained to one area of the yard. Our waste management company offers one free "bulky item" pick-up day per household each year and as soon as the labor lock-out gets resolved, I plan to schedule my pick-up. In the meantime, however, I’m enjoying summertime in the Bay Area and relishing the new look and feel to my backyard.

Onwards!

 - Pet Mementos - A Note from Misty

Hi. My name is Misty and Linda, my human mom and I wanted to tell you about the Pet Mementos made by Carol Swann. They are beautiful and such a great way to remember your pet. Linda has purchased a number of them as gifts for those who have lost a pet recently. From a dog's perspective I think it is a very cool way to keep your pet close to you for always. Have a look at the website at www.petmementos.com and pass it onto others who have pets or work with animals. You'll love them. We sure do and so did the people we gave them to!

Love, Misty slurp, slurp

 - Personal Reflections

I had a number of wonderful occasions this past month. As you may have noticed there are several pictures in today’s newsletter. Charged up those batteries after last month’s failure and have been busily taking pictures since.

I sponsor, along with two other sponsors, an Olympic mountain biker, Kiara Bisaro. Kiara was finally home from Europe for a week and here to participate in the National Championships that were held here. The sponsors always like to have a dinner together whenever Kiara is home and this time was no exception. Here is a picture of Kiara and I at the BBQ. She is such an inspiration to me and the hours and hours that she trains is head-spinning. This time when Kiara was home she and I went on a bike ride if you can believe it. Me and an Olympian!! She gave me lots of excellent tips as well as encouragement, particularly with those Cumberland hills and I can honestly say I feel much more confident in my mountain biking abilities. Kiara is a real trooper and I look forward to her being at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

Remember Kathryn Chung, who used to write all about de-cluttering and organizing, for our newsletter before she had her two little ones? Well, I convinced Kathryn to come out of "full time motherhood" for a few hours to help me re-organize and de-clutter my office storage closet. Here are the before and after pictures of that transformation. We did this almost two years ago just after we moved in. I was amazed at what I "thought" I needed versus what I actually used during that time. As you can see in the after photos there is tons of empty space now. More stuff was shredded, thrown out and donated and it was a great feeling to see a new uncluttered space. We have a wee bit more to do in my actual office space and I am gearing up to tackle that. It is not a lot of physical stuff but the mental clutter associated with those few piles is much bigger and more invasive.

I had a rather unusual yet delightful birthday this year. I spent the day with a lovely little five-year-old girl named Kassy. She is the daughter of friends of ours and has been asking to come and stay the night for some time. David ended up working on my birthday so I thought it would be a great day to have Kassy come and stay with us. It was a very full day. I picked Kassy up at 8:30am and we were off to do a few chores, plan a dinner of burgers and corn on the cob with ice cream for dessert, do the shopping and pick up a kid-friendly movie for the evening. We did all that and then took Misty with us for a long walk to the water park where Kassy played for an hour in the hot sunshine and water and Misty and I played ball. Two five-year-olds (Kassy & Misty) having the time of their lives. After a long walk home Kassy had a BIG bubble bath and put on her "party" clothes for dinner and the movie. She and I hit the sack by 9:00pm and were asleep by 9:01pm. I was exhausted after a non-stop day with Kassy. It was one of my best birthdays.

More photos. These are of the new client meeting space. David and I switched the small client space with my office, which was much larger. This space is so much more useful and comfortable when meeting with clients. I notice it and my clients do too. It is a nice, welcoming and relaxing space for them and that makes me happy. I forgot to take pictures of my new office space so I will do that for next newsletter. Again, we re-configured space, re-organized and it is a very functional and surprisingly comfortable space for me to work. I quite love it.

 - Cumberland Chronicles

And now for the amazing photo found in the "Cumberland Chronicles" section of our newsletter. This is a photo of a wonderful, not so little visitor we had this week at 4:45am. The photo is an hour after this lovely creature satiated himself with the cherries of two trees. Misty awoke us with her low growl while running around the bedroom and sniffing away. She can smell a bear far sooner than we can ever hear one. He ate for an hour and it was an amazing thing to watch. We woke our guests at the Village Hideaway (they requested if we saw a bear to phone them) and they planted themselves on the lower deck with camera and binoculars and we were on the upper deck with our camera.

This guy was amazing. He could stand almost on his head while eating the cherries and balance himself like I have never seen. He tore off a branch at a time, ate the fruit then dropped the branch to the ground. Fascinating. He’s been by twice now. Not sure if he’ll be back before the apples are ready in another month. They are looking plentiful so I expect it will be a big season of eating before winter’s hibernation.

We had the same guests at Village Hideaway for the past three months and they left yesterday and are planning to come back for three weeks when their baby is due in November. We had a lovely dinner together the night before they left. Feels very strange to not have them here and we look forward to seeing them again mid-October. We’ve another guest arrive today for three weeks. She’s off to England with the military to study. Her home sold before she was ready to leave here so she is making the Village Hideaway her home away from home for the rest of the month. The vacation suite is such a great way to introduce people to the Village and Village life and the response is overwhelmingly positive. It’s like Cumberland was one of the best-kept little secrets that’s being discovered. We’ve a new neighbour a few doors up. A 40 something fellow that owns a café (delicious breakfasts – we’ve been there) in a neighbouring city just bought a fixer-upper on the street and I can’t wait to see the transformation over time. A new fence is up to house the dog he has which is a good sign of a responsible pet owner.

There has also been an empty lot across from us for years and now a woman is building a new home for herself there. Sounds like a neat design. The foundation is in so we expect framing to start soon and she plans to be in by Christmas. In the meantime, we have that construction dust floating around through the windows.

The rest of the Village seems to be bustling with summer activities as well as several renovation and restoration projects in the works. This place is a gem and continues to be polished up in so many ways by such a mix of people with such talent. Every day is a new discovery of something new. I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
