 - Quote of the month

"The fewer data needed, the better the information. And an overload of information, that is, anything much beyond what is truly needed, leads to information blackout. It does not enrich, but impoverishes."

 ~Peter F. Drucker

- A Note from Linda

How welcoming to have Spring surround us! Underneath all the dismal of rainy winters here, lies the newness and simplicity of Spring. You know simplicity and me. That’s my mission and work in this world: to assist my clients in discovering what’s getting in the way of what they want or where they want to go and how to best manage or eliminate it.

The quote by Peter Drucker strikes a chord with me, particularly after a few meetings I attended in the past few days. Cluttered meetings might I add. Ones full of too much information or re-hashing over and over while completely missing, in my view, what is/was needed in order to move where we wanted to be. People talk about simplicity and seeking it, whether in business or in their personal lives, yet I consistently see and experience something quite the opposite lately. I like Peter’s idea about too much information impoverishing us. I see this in my clients when they are feeling overwhelmed by what to do, where to go and how to be in their work and in their lives. Simplify, simplify, simplify. That is the key.

I spent a most delightful retreat with a client from California last month where we did just that, simplified, got clear about where she was and where she wanted to be. We got clear on how she could get there and she made choices about how she wanted to spend her time and energy going forward in her life. It was outstanding and fabulous for both of us. As her coach, I was moved by her revelations and her feelings and experiences of success throughout our three days together. I remember being so deep in conversation at the beginning of day one together and looking up and realizing we had just spent four hours in conversation that was so enriching and revealing of possibilities for my client in areas she didn’t even know existed. We spent three days simplifying information and data in her life. It was remarkable to witness. I love my work.

 - Ask the Coach

Question: I have been with my employer a number of years now and we have a good working relationship. I have decided that I really need to move on, to stretch my horizons. I feel very ambivalent whenever I decide to talk to him about it. What should I do to get going on this?

Answer: First, there are no “shoulds”.  Shoulds have a heaviness attached to them as well as an Inner Critic. A first step might be to ask yourself the question, “If I choose to leave what other possibilities could there be for me?” Make a list of those things and do not judge that there may not be “enough”. You can always add to the list as you get new ideas or thoughts. This is a big step you are taking and as you said there is a level of comfort in this working relationship versus the unknown that you are moving towards.

Next, make a list of all that you have done and accomplished over the years with this employer and then a list of skills that have supported you in getting there. Again, keep those lists, as you will find things to add to them. Ask others you trust, maybe friends, what skills they see that you have and add those.

Thirdly, make another list of all the people you know and those you know who may know others they can introduce you to. This is a network list that will be invaluable to you. I know, because dozens of clients of mine have changed jobs and used their “Network Lists” to assist them in getting to the right people for them.

Once you get clear on the decision to leave, let your employer know about your desire to stretch yourself in new work. Because of your positive relationship he may even end up on your Network List. You never know is one thing I know. Along with telling your employer, tell everyone else that you are looking for new work in the area of _______ and ask them if they know anyone who they could introduce you to.

Take the time to get your resume in good shape before you start making contacts with folks. It would be embarrassing for you to be asked for your resume and not have a current one. It is likely that you have not had a resume in years due to your longevity with this company. There are many professionals out there who you can hire to assist you with this. Ask around and hire yourself one.

Those are a few things to get you started. Let me know how things are going and what “next step” questions you may have. Stay focused on the steps you are taking and the accomplishments you are making daily toward your goal so you can actually “see” your progress and stay motivated.

Write us at clutter@ascentcoaching.com and tell us all about it so we can cheer you on and congratulate you as well!

- Book Report

“It’s Not What Happens To You, It’s What You Do About It”: Taking Responsibility For Change

by W Mitchell
ISBN 0-9637901-0-2

An easy read over 1-2 evenings, Mitchell’s autobiographical book takes you through the two life-changing accidents he survived, and the positive philosophy he adopted that kept him motivated to continue reaching for his dreams.

The crux of the philosophy comes from the theoretical concepts of Morehouse:

  • Accept yourself, for better or worse, so you can allow yourself to move on and not be trapped in a web of self-hatred;

  • You are free to look at every difficulty that life brings your way as a challenge rather than a setback; and

  • You, and only you, are the only one who can turn your life around.

Mitchell applies this philosophy to his own circumstances and has become a successful businessman, mayor, commercial pilot, media personality, and in-demand public speaker. While these might not be your particular measures of success, his message is clear: nothing is absolute; whatever you want, you can achieve it; and your life is entirely what you decide it is. Change what happens in your head, and the universe changes. Mitchell’s story provides an inspirational “shot in the arm” for those whose life’s dreams are not yet fulfilled!

"My retreat with Linda helped me to identify the areas of my life that were not working.  - Personal Reflections

I am going to start this section of the newsletter with a story of the law of attraction and the power of intention. The story has to do with two clients of mine. A client and his wife want to start a project in the Comox Valley, which puts kids with special needs together with bikes they can ride. They are asking 35 couples to each donate $1000 towards the founding of this project. David and I were one of the couples asked. We loved the idea. And $1000 is a lot of money. At the end of that week I emailed my client that David and I were “in” for the project. Now, to come up with the $1000.

As you know from earlier in the newsletter, I had a client here from California to do a three-day retreat with me. When she left she left me a “tip”, a cheque for $1000. She said that the “retreat was priceless and if she could she’d have left me more.” I, of course, was thrilled and flattered that the work we did together had such an impact and even more, I was over the moon that we now had the money to contribute to the kids program. I quickly emailed my client to tell him of the story about how this all took place and he was quite moved. I told my retreat client the story as well and she was thrilled the extra money was going to support the kids and their bike program. My retreat client received an excellent retreat; I received a bonus and my other client received the money needed for the program they want to start. Everyone was a winner and each of us attracted what he or she needed. The power of intention and the law of attraction are really alive and well. How about in your life?

David and I had a very nice getaway to Quadra Island at the end of March. Here’s a picture of me (and Misty’s tail) walking along the beach on a very sunny and extremely windy day. We stayed in a little cabin on a river and did a lot of hiking over two days. I even read a whole book while I was there and a great one it was – the Pursuit of Happyness. Nice to have that down time with no computer, no phone and no office. Just, blue skies, the ocean, a river, some food, Misty, David and I.

David and I, of course, are very excited about our vacation rental. The website is up www.villagehideaway.com and the brochures and business cards will be ready on Friday. I personally love the suite and just being in it feels so relaxing, warm and inviting. I did my last retreat there with my client from California and it was a perfect setting for it. My client loved the space so much she has booked a week in the Fall to come back with a friend for a holiday. Because of the extra amenities it has (wireless internet and an office with computer) it is perfect for a business traveler. I was thinking this morning that it is also an excellent space for a small team to meet for the day. It’s a great layout with a beautiful view of the forest, lots of light and far from a typical office environment. Really, quite perfect for a team and one lucky person could stay the night after the rest leave. Now, that would be a treat! Have a look and see what you think. And please... forward the website to friends and acquaintances.

The website again is www.villagehideaway.com.

We’d be very appreciative if you did. Thanks.

We also received some pictures from Jennifer, our youngest and her little one TJ. Here’s a most beautiful picture of her and TJ, just after his first haircut. My, how life is changing around us.

 - Cumberland Chronicles

Brad, Tania and Cohen were here for a weekend visit and we had a grand time. This is a picture of them in the Orchard in front of the 100 year old apple tree I purchased at our Rotary auction last October.

Although a cool day, it was sunny and perfect for a nice long walk. We headed off to the forest trails, Brad with his camera and Cohen with a face full of delight. Here is a picture of Cohen standing on a hill of dirt he thought was a “big mountain”. An adorable 2 year old, don’t you think?

The Village is gearing up for Earth Day this weekend with a number of hikes planned throughout the different trails as well as a party of sorts in the Village Square in the downtown core. If the weather is like today it will be an ideal day for us to be out and about.

Speaking of out and about, David and I went on our first mountain bike ride this past weekend. We went off to a trail through the forest and along a logging road. It felt like cycling through sand to me! Very hard work for someone who is not a “cyclist” per say. I did improve both in my confidence and skill on the way back so there is hope that this will actually be something “fun” and that I will thoroughly enjoy one day. :~) Misty had a blast, running like she hasn’t it ages and of course hitting every water hole along the way. She slept for the entire evening on our return.

The forests are so beautiful here and we are awe-struck when we look out our living room windows to such beauty. The humming birds are back now and as beautiful as ever and the frogs once again sing us to sleep with their orchestral croaking.

The Village is full of people with the advent of Spring and it is a lovely sight when the Village comes alive.
