"Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all." ~Dale Carnegie Fall is certainly upon us today as I write the newsletter while the rain falls and the leaves drop in the gently blowing wind. This kind of weather seems to lead to time for contemplation. Maybe it's because the rush of the summer is over and we are beginning to hibernate more as the weather changes and darkness comes early. We have an interesting quote this month from Dale Carnegie. I wonder if it is always true? I think his point is about holding on to the vision of possibilities and utilizing our ability to focus on those things/people/experiences that are so important to us. I know from my own experience that those times I have not given up and focused “one more time” I have contributed to important things for others as well as myself.
Speaking of getting focused and a time for
contemplation I am thrilled to be able to offer another group retreat
the first weekend in December. I am even more excited to have found
another option for a retreat and specifically one that offers a great
location and layout for a group retreat. There are a few spaces left and
I invite you to join us. It’s a perfect Fall or pre-holiday gift to give
yourself. Think about it, decide and
email me or call and we’ll have you join us for a retreat in my
Village. You’ll see details for the
retreat in this newsletter. - Linda
Now,
Discover your Strengths This book was a great tool in our work together in her search for new and meaningful work with a boss she could connect with. This book includes an on-line assessment of your strengths. The assessment and results are based on a study of over two million people and has fascinating insights, knowledge and tools in assisting individuals and companies in identifying their talents and building them into strengths. The results are right on target in my opinion. I have read the book and completed the assessment and was frankly not surprised to see that I am definitely working to my top five talents and strengths. No wonder I love my work! Made perfect sense to me and to those clients who I have recommended purchasing and taking the assessment. You take your talents and build them into strengths. What is so obvious in this book is missed in so many organizations. So much time is spent “bridging the gaps and working on the weaknesses” of individuals rather than on their strengths. The results in this thinking are people who get stuck, frustrated, uninspired and a company or organization that goes in circles. Buy it, read it for yourself, take the assessment and then let me know what you think. By the way, my client found a fabulous job with a boss that was over the moon with her skills, talents and strengths and we have another match made in heaven. Well, of course it is not quite heaven, as that may be in fact unattainable for most and yet it is darn close and she’s very happy. Question: My office is cluttered with papers, bills, equipment, throw in a few kids toys and you don’t have an ‘ideal’ working environment – where should I start when I finally get to organize my office?
************** Clutter is sometimes related to not having our space set up in a way that best supports what we want to use that space for. For example: if your filing area is something you use frequently and you have it off in a corner rather that close by to the work space I can guarantee there will be a pile of something created between where you do your work and the filing area as the space is not set up to support you. Move the filing cabinet or whatever system you use close to where you are working. If that is not possible, set up an interim-filing basket close to your workspace so that all the important stuff is at least together. Next step is to set aside a regular time daily or weekly to file the papers where they really need to be. In terms of office organization create the picture and then set aside the time without interruption to clear the clutter and set up the space how it works best for you. Again, it is always helpful to have someone help you do that; either a friend or a paid person. You will be much more motivated with someone else there to share the load and may actually be fun. Keep in mind that when the space is finished it will support you in a much more effortless way. Not only are you reducing physical clutter by creating a struggle-free environment, you will have cleared a huge pile of mental clutter as well. And for those of you with kids around your home office: teach them to take out their toys from your space and put them away. You could have a little game with them. Mom puts away two things in her space and the kids put away two of their things from your space. Office clutter is on-going for most of us. It is building in strategies and time to handle it that will make all the difference. - Linda

Well, what has been the big news
for me since our last newsletter? David and I and Misty took a road
trip to Calgary, Alberta at the end of September, beginning of
October. The drive through the Rocky Mountains was spectacular. We
visited our good friends Georgina and Simon in their new home. Did
lots of catching up, helped do a few projects and kept Simon company
while Georgina was having surgery. That’s the thing about good
friends. Being with them is like being at home, totally comfortable
and connected. We had some great meals, great wine and great
conversations. Misty was in heaven with all the extra attention and
having a park just ½ a block away, complete with a pond. A retriever
and a pond... a perfect match! We also stopped to have a quick visit
with other friends in Kelowna and Vancouver going to and from
Calgary. Another bonus with a road trip. Stop where and when you
like. No security checks and no line-ups. Yeah!!! It has been a busy time in the Village this past while. There’s a new restaurant in town and we went with our friends Helen and Tom to check it out. We ordered all but two things on the menu and it was absolutely delicious! Of course we walked there and back; that’s the beauty of living here. The Fall colors on the trees have been stunning this year and we have had the bonus of seeing so much of it through all those wonderful windows we put in our house. Our Cumberland Rotary club had an Italian extravaganza dinner and auction to raise money for defibrillators in the Village. We invited a number of friends to join us. We had a five course Italian (of course) dinner and a live and silent auction. The 250 people who attended raised over $24,000.00 in the evening. Needless to say we have purchased four defibrillators for our community. We are the first in British Columbia to do so. I came home having bought a 100-year-old apple tree in an orchard up the street from us. The bears love that orchard! There will be a plaque put on the tree with mine & David’s names and a dedication of the tree to our grandchildren. I think it will be great for our grandkids to see as they grow. We also had a big Halloween parade downtown Cumberland this year. I was a crossing guard for the pirates, goblins and princesses. It was the first annual and a huge success. I am thrilled that we now have a Guest House available here. I know the woman who owns and runs it and she is lovely. I am so excited about doing the group retreat there the first weekend in December. It will be a real treat for the participants and me. We can do some work together then hang out in the Village for a bit or walk in the forests. Fun. Now is your chance to sign up. If you can’t come to this one you can sign up for the one towards the end of January, a great way to start the New Year. The more people I can share Cumberland with, the better. - Linda For
