Quote of the month
"If you want happiness
for a lifetime - help others."
Chinese Proverb
- A Note from
Linda
I can’t believe how many emails I received
about the poem “There’s a Hole in my Sidewalk” from last month. It
obviously struck a chord for many. In case you missed it
read it.
I’ve had the wonderful opportunity and pleasure to coach with an Olympic
cyclist this past month that came to me via another client of mine. It’s
been an amazing and learning experience to witness a measure of focus in
this woman that I have not seen in my career or life. Her commitment and
drive was both inspiring and exhausting. She trains in some way every
single day of the year be it running, skiing, snowshoeing, weight
training and of course cycling. Her plan after the 2008 Olympics is to
work with young children to involve them in sports as a way of
increasing confidence, social skills and cooperation. I learned from her
that having a passion is one thing and to commit to a focus of
excellence in that passion is quite another. We certainly don’t all want
to nor need to be Olympians although I am sure some of us can certainly
benefit from being more focused, clear and inspired to reach a higher
level of focus in something we want for ourselves. I know I can.
Thanks KB for being an inspiration to me.

The Book
Report
Below is a book review sent to me from my
client, Trevor Wickham. I have not seen the book yet although this sounds
very interesting.
"I am currently reading a book that you might want to consider featuring -
it's called:
Getting Things Done: the art of stress-free productivity by David Allen.
The thing I really like about this book and his methods - is that there
is a piece of software that links with MS Outlook (which the majority of the
world uses for their desktop calendar/email/task lists etc) - that allows
you to integrate his teachings/methods with MS Outlook - it's the key to
linking idea/method with practice - it's brilliant for me. You might want to
pass this on to your clients - who like me - process anywhere between 70 and
150 emails a day..."
Thanks Trevor!

"My
retreat with Linda helped me to identify the areas of my life that
were not working. She helped me to formulate a plan that would
facilitate those changes
and my coaching with her gave me the direction and the confidence
to move forward. We
continue to work together as
I move along the path towards creating more
space for what I want in my life ."

Personal Reflections
I got a lot packed into the short month of February.
I started the month off with a Chamber Board retreat at the
Kingfisher
Resort and Spa, which included an overnight in a suite looking out
to the ocean. It was a wild and stormy night with winds howling,
waves crashing and power outages. I sat for a while on the deck
outside my room just watching and listening and remembering my
friend Annemarie who died 14 months ago. She would have loved a
night like this. It was truly perfect.
I also had a busy month with my Rotary group. We hold a Gala Auction
dinner each year raising about $50,000 to do a local community
project. As you can imagine this takes many people and much work
over a number of months to ensure a positive outcome. The day of the
auction was spent helping to get things ready and during the evening
I was a hostess looking after 32 guests making sure they had a great
time. My job was to pour wine, sell tickets for special events and
encourage bidding in both the silent and live auctions. I had a
great time despite being on my feet for eight hours. Many clients
and friends were there which made for lots of laughs and what seemed
a lighter workload. We had a very successful auction and are now
getting ready to roll up our sleeves to do some manual labor.
Habitat for Humanity is building their next project in our community
in May. They do such fabulous work and I appreciate their commitment
to having the new homeowners participating in their own future. A
great model that could be well used in other organizations. Again
this year I am donating the money for 250 volunteer
t-shirts and I’d
like to plan my schedule so that I could actually work on the site
for half a day. Who knows, maybe after having been the General
Contractor for our house I may just get to hammer a few nails.
Habitat builds a house in just over week and it took us six months!
Oh yes, I have some more good news. I have an assistant now who I am
contracting with to do some of my organizational stuff that needs
doing and she gets to do most of it from the comfort of her own home
office. We are working on computer stuff to make us and our systems
more compatible and I am very excited about the potential for me,
Jane and the business. Welcome Jane!

Cumberland Chronicles
We had an
exciting celebration in the Village in February. There was a Taiwanese
Lantern Festival for 10 days, kicked off by a foot parade down the main
street to the park where 4000 people gathered to hear a Taiko drumming
group (all teenagers) from Taiwan, a Buddhist blessing and watch as
lanterns were lit and offered up to the skies. The cold clear night was
lit up with thousands of brilliant stars. The Lantern display is held
indoors with about 40-lighted handmade lanterns. Some lanterns have as
many as 250 bulbs and take about two plus years to make. I wish I had
taken a photo to show you. It was magnificent. Cumberland is the only
place outside of Taiwan where this festival takes place. Pretty cool for
a Village of 2000 people wouldn’t you say? Needless to say, the Village
was hopping for those 10 days.
On the home front there is still more stuff to get done although
progress is being made. We have a new person who is going to do our
built-ins around the fireplace. I expect he’ll be back to us with a
design and pricing this week. I would sure love to get the living room
finished and have that space fully organized. We met with our landscaper
this morning to talk about both the front and back yards. The back will
be simple; lawn, two small garden beds, an 8X4 raised garden bed for my
mom to grow veggies or plants and a clothesline. Wish I had the
clothesline today. It’s a beautiful sunny day with a light breeze and
ideal for hanging out clothes. I love clotheslines! In the front yard
will be where the time, energy and design take place. Our landscaper is
going to email us some drawings of what it could look like. The
possibilities are almost endless although the budget is not. We’ll see.
I’m looking forward to how it will finish off the house. Speaking of
finishing off the house the exterior doors still need to be finished
painting. I must get in touch with the painter now that the weather is
better. Hope he is still around and available. I made the mistake of
paying him before the job was fully completed. A lesson well learned. I
expect I’ll have some pictures for next months newsletter with something
at least started. Maybe that will be David’s workshop that he is putting
together bit by bit.
Well, it is far too sunny to be sitting inside so we are off with the
dog to the Cumberland Forest for a hike through the hills. Care to join
us?
